Security Alert – U.S. Embassy Baghdad, Iraq – May 5, 2026

Location: Iraq

Iraqi airspace has reopened and limited commercial flights are operating. Those considering air travel in Iraq should be aware of the ongoing potential risk of missiles, drones, and rockets in Iraqi airspace. The U.S. Embassy in Iraq reminds U.S. citizens of the Level 4: Do Not Travel warning for Iraq. U.S. citizens are advised: “Do not travel to Iraq for any reason. Leave now if you are there.”

Iraqi terrorist militias aligned with Iran continue to plot additional attacks against U.S. citizens and targets associated with the United States throughout Iraq, including in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region (IKR). Some elements associated with the Iraqi government continue to actively provide political, financial, and operational cover for these terrorist militias.

U.S. Mission Iraq remains open while on ordered departure to assist U.S. citizens in Iraq. Do not attempt to come to the Embassy in Baghdad or the Consulate General in Erbil in light of significant security risks. If you are a U.S. citizen and need assistance, contact U.S. Embassy Baghdad at BaghdadACS@state.gov, or Consulate General Erbil at ErbilACS@state.gov.

U.S. citizens wishing to travel via land crossings should check security alerts and travel advisories for those countries at official U.S. Embassy websites.

Consular Operations
Routine consular services in Iraq remain suspended, including all visa services. Americans should contact BaghdadACS@state.gov or ErbilACS@state.gov in case of emergency.

IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir says the military is "prepared to respond with force" if Iran targets Israel amid the escalation in the Gulf.

"Our forces are deployed across all sectors, fighting and prepared in immediate readiness for any scenario — from near and from far," Zamir says at a handover ceremony for the chief of the Israeli Air Force.

"The IDF, in all its systems, maintains high readiness," he says.

Zamir says the military is "closely monitoring developments in the Persian Gulf" and is "prepared to respond with force against any attempt to harm Israel.”
