Why do Calcutta High Court judges still wear colonial-era wigs?

At the swearing-in ceremony of West Bengal Governor RN Ravi, Chief Justice Sujoy Paul wore a colonial-era wig and robe. The HCs of Calcutta, Madras and Bombay were established pre-independence, so their ceremonies are linked to the British. Indian courts continued with British-era traditions to mark hierarchy, said lawyer Sanjay Ghose. Barring Calcutta HC, most courts discontinued this tradition.

US Embassy in Iraq's capital hit by suicide drone

A suicide drone struck a helipad inside the US Embassy compound in Iraq's capital Baghdad. A video has surfaced showing fire and smoke rising over the embassy on Saturday morning. The embassy complex is one of the largest US diplomatic facilities in the world. Hours before the attack, the embassy warned that Iran-aligned militias are targeting US citizens and infrastructure.

Iran may let oil tankers trading in Chinese yuan cross Strait of Hormuz: Report

Iran may allow a limited number of oil tankers to cross the Strait of Hormuz if their cargo is traded in Chinese yuan, CNN reported, citing a senior official. Most of the world's oil is traded in US dollars except for some sanctioned Russian oil, which trades in roubles/yuan. Recently, an Indian-bound LPG tanker was allowed to cross the strait.

16-year-old Mayank Chakraborty becomes India's 1st chess Grandmaster from Northeast

Mayank Chakraborty has become India's 94th Grandmaster and the first from the Northeast. The 16-year-old, hailing from Assam, bagged his third and final GM norm at the Hotel Stockholm North by First Hotels Young Talents tournament in Sweden. Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Mayank, calling it "a proud moment for Assam". Mayank is ranked 55th in India.

North Korea fires suspected missile towards sea

North Korea launched a suspected ballistic missile towards the sea on Saturday, Japan and South Korea have confirmed. The launch of the projectile, which was reportedly fired towards the Sea of Japan, comes as US and South Korea carried out military drills. Indian Navy escorted India-bound LPG tanker through Strait of Hormuz

Indian-bound LPG tanker Shivalik crossed the Strait of Hormuz under escort from the Indian Navy, Reuters reported citing two sources. Sonam Wangchuk to be released from jail after 6 months, govt revokes detention

Government has decided to revoke the detention of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect under National Security Act. Wangchuk was detained and lodged in Jodhpur jail for nearly six months after protests for statehood in Ladakh turned violent in September 2025. Wangchuk has already undergone nearly half of the period of detention under the said act, said government.

'Transgenders' to get new definition as Centre moves Bill
