Canada's economy contracted in first quarter of 2026 on an annualised basis, data showed, making it two consecutive quarters of annualised decline, which is called a technical recession. However, on quarterly basis, first quarter GDP was unchanged against a decline in fourth quarter of last year. GDP declined at annualised rate of β0.1% in the first quarter, Statistics Canada said.
