Polyculture Planting & Designs
Polyculture growing is referred to by many names— companion planting, multi-species sowing, agroforestry or mixture planting; it is about designing an interplanting of synergetic species together (usually two or more) for increased soil health, improved plant health and resilience, even for a reduction of disease/pests. For example, using crops like legumes as soil fertilizers puts nitrogen back into the soil of the main crop.
Polycultures are formed when we intentionally design & plan out the co-planting of several different plant species in the same area to mimic nature’s interwoven systems more closely.
Systems of polycultures ideas:
—small fruit tree guilds
—agroforestry layering of multi-species crops to fill all unused soil/space (root crops mixed with taller species, etc
—companions designs like tomatoes & carrots or tomatoes & peanuts, or eggplant & ginger
—rotational cover cropping (no bare soil)
—relay cropping, where a second crop is planted before the harvest of your first crop.
—mixed species of pollinator plants/shrubs/flowers in wildlife gardens.
Biodiversity in planting & design increases the fertility and microbiome of our soil, improves fruiting & pollination, Reduces weed pressures and creates thriving plant communities that have mutual benefits.
