Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) #Prelims #Mains

1. Purpose:
  - Collects data on household
    consumption and expenditure
    to assess economic trends,
    poverty, inequality, and update
    the Consumer Price Index
    basket.
- Conducted by NSSO, MoSPI.

2. Key Indicators:
  - Monthly Per Capita Consumption
    Expenditure (MPCE) is the primary
   metric.
  - MPCE is measured with and
    without imputed values of free
    social welfare items.

3. Findings (2023-24):
  - MPCE Growth: 9% in rural areas
    and 8% in urban areas
    (nominal prices).
  - Urban-Rural Gap: Declined to 70%
    (from 71% in 2022-23 and 84% in
     2011-12).

  - Food: Major share spent on
