What is photosphere?

Photosphere is the outer shell of star from which light is radiated. It is the innermost layer of the solar atmosphere to which our eyes can penetrate through the superficial transparent layers. Our view is obstructed beyond this layer by the rapidly increasing opacity of the denser layers of the gas as we go inward through it. Temperature of photosphere for Sun is about 5,800 K and values of pressure & density are low.

What are essential fatty acids?

Human body can synthesize most of the fats it require. However, two essential fatty acids, linoleic and alpha-linolenic, cannot be synthesized in the body and must be obtained from food. These basic fats, found in plant foods, are used to build other specialized fats called omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

How do night goggles work and what type of energy do they use?

Truth is, not all types of light is visible. The light that we can see is only part of the electromagnetic spectrum .There are other types of light, such as infrared and ultraviolet light, which cannot be seen by the naked eye .
In the darkest places, there will always be a little light, even if it only is infrared light. What the googles do is they "enhance the image". This means that the goggles "amplifies the light" if you will.

What is 'Bank Run'

A bank run occurs when a large number of customers of a bank or another financial institution withdraw their deposits simultaneously due to concerns about the bank's solvency. As more people withdraw their funds, the probability of default increases, thereby prompting more people to withdraw their deposits. In extreme cases, the bank's reserves may not be sufficient to cover the withdrawals.

BREAKING DOWN 'Bank Run'

A bank run is typically the result of panic rather than true insolvency on the part of the bank. However, the bank does risk default as more individuals withdraw funds; what began as panic can turn into a true default situation. A bank run triggered by fear that pushes a bank into actual insolvency represents a classic example of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

How Bank Runs Happen

Because banks typically keep only a small percentage of deposits as cash on hand, they must increase cash to meet depositors' withdrawal demands. One method a bank uses to increase cash on hand is to sell off its assets, sometimes at significantly lower prices than if it did not have to sell quickly. Losses on selling the assets at lower prices can cause a bank to become insolvent. A bank panic occurs when multiple banks endure runs at the same time.

Bank Run Examples

The stock market crash of 1929 precipitated a spate of bank runs across the country, ultimately culminating in the Great Depression. The succession of bank runs that occurred in late 1929 and early 1930 represented a domino effect of sorts, as news of one bank failure spooked customers of nearby banks and prompted them to withdraw their money. For example, a single bank failure in Nashville led to a host of bank runs across the Southeast.

Other bank runs during the Depression occurred as a result of rumors started by individual customers. In December 1930, a New Yorker who had been advised by the Bank of United States against selling a particular stock left the branch and promptly began telling people the bank was unwilling or unable to sell his shares. Interpreting this as a sign of insolvency, bank customers lined up by the thousands and, within hours, withdrew over $2 million from the bank.

📝 India gets direct access to swiss accounts

🔴 What has Switzerland ratified?

Switzerland Friday ratified automatic exchange of financial account information (AEOI) with India and 40 other jurisdictions to facilitate immediate sharing of details about suspected black money, even as it sought strict adherence to confidentiality and data security.

🔘 Adopting the dispatch on introduction of the AEOI, a global convention for automatic information exchange on tax matters, the Swiss Federal Council said the implementation is planned for 2018 and the first set of data should be exchanged in 2019.

🔘 The council, which is the top governing body of the European nation, will soon notify the Indian government about the exact date from which the automatic exchange would begin.

As per the draft notification approved by the council in its meeting on Friday, the decision is not subject to any referendum — which means there should be no further procedural delay in its implementation.

🔘 The council said the proposal to introduce AEOI with India and others “met with widespread approval from the interested parties who voiced their opinions in the consultations“.

🔘 “In concrete terms, the AEOI will be activated with each individual state or territory by means of a specific federal decree within the framework of this dispatch,” it added.

🔘 The exchange of information itself will be carried out based on the Multilateral Competent Authority Agreement (MCAA) on the Automatic Exchange of Financial Account Information, which in turn is based on the international standard for the exchange of information developed by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

The council said it will prepare a situation report before the first exchange of data, which is planned for autumn 2019.

🔴 Why is Switzerland forced to share information?

For decades, Switzerland was the place where money went to hide. Cash sent to its mountain sanctuaries was protected by some of the strictest secrecy laws in the world.

🔘 But the euro crisis of 2011 saw Switzerland's strict banking secrecy come under assault from countries such as Germany and Britain as never before.

🔘 The council that serves as Switzerland's executive branch had to start looking into steps toward banking transparency after having been threatened with painful isolation if it did not agree to reforms.

🔘 There have also been continuous global efforts to crackdown on illicit fund flows in the system and do away with banking secrecy practices.

UPSC Massala:
♻️ Environmental Impact Survey

India has been ranked 75th out of 102 countries in a list that ranks the countries in terms of the human impact on environment per person. The ranking has been done by MoneySuperMarket, a UK-based financial services website.

The ranking has been made based on the impact the citizens have on the environment by taking into account energy consumption, air pollution, waste production, reliance on non-renewable energy, the carbon dioxide emissions per capita, wastewater treatment capacity, municipal solid waste generated and tree cover loss etc. Of all the parameters, the most weight has been given to Carbon dioxide emissions, municipal solid waste and energy consumption.

Salient Highlights

Top 10 Performers: Mozambique (1st), Ethiopia (2nd), Zambia (3rd), Latvia (4th), Kenya (5th), Albania (6th), Ghana (7th), Tajikistan (8th), Nepal (9th), Colombia (10th).

Worst Performers: Trinidad and Tobago (102nd), United States (101st), Sri Lanka (100th), Ireland (99th), Canada (98th), China (97th), Australia (96th), South Africa (95th), Cyprus (94th), Malaysia (93rd).

Mozambique has topped the list as it derives almost all of its energy from green sources.

India, on the other hand, has been placed at 75th place as its renewable energy sources make up only 15.2% of all energy sources used.

The US has been placed second last on the list at the 101st position as the U.S. per capita carbon dioxide emissions are 17 tonnes per capita. Further, the country generates 2.58 kgs of municipal solid waste per person, and the energy consumption is 312.79 BTU per capita. Also, its reliance on renewable sources are even lower than India at 12.56%

India, on the other hand, generates 1.7 tonnes of carbon dioxide per capita (between 1990 and 2011), 0.34 kgs of municipal solid waste generated per day per person, and energy consumption at 19.75 BTU (British Thermal Unit.) India has been ranked poorly due to its low reliance on renewable energy (15.2%).

Trinidad and Tobago has been ranked last as it hardly relies on any green energy sources. Africa as a continent has topped the list.

What are Micronutrients ?

Micronutrients are nutrients required throughout life in small quantities for a wide range of physiological functions enabling the body to produce enzymes, hormones and other substances essential for proper growth and development. These include dietary trace minerals in amounts generally less than 100 milligrams per day, as opposed to macrominerals, which are required in larger quantities. The microminerals or trace elements include iron, cobalt, chromium, copper, iodine, manganese, selenium, zinc and molybdenum. Vitamins are also micronutrients and perform diverse biochemical functions.

When was the PMAY scheme launched?

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana which aims to provide Housing for All by 2022 was launched in June 2015. The Government envisages building affordable pucca  houses with water facility, sanitation and electricity supply round-the-clock.

The scheme originally was meant to cover people in the EWS (annual income not exceeding Rs. 3 lakh) and LIG (annual income not exceeding Rs. 6 lakh) sections, but now covers the mid-income group (MIG) as well.

Under PMAY, it is proposed to build 2 crore houses for urban poor including Economically Weaker Sections and Low Income Groups in urban areas by the year 2022 through a financial assistance of Rs. 2 trillion (US$31 billion) from central government.

This Mission has four components viz., In-situ Slum Redevelopment with private sector participation using land as resource, Affordable Housing through Credit Linked Subsidy, Affordable Housing in Partnership with private and public sector and Beneficiary led house construction/enhancement. Under these components, central assistance will be in the range of Rs. 1 lakh (US$1,600) to Rs. 2.30 lakh (US$3,600).

It aims to transform slum areas by building homes for slum dwellers in collaboration with private developers.

It plans to give a credit-linked subsidy to weaker and mid income sections on loans taken for new construction or renovation of existing homes. An interest subsidy of 3 per cent to 6.5 per cent has been announced for loans ranging between Rs. 6 lakh and Rs. 12 lakh.

For those in the EWS and LIG category who wish to take a loan of up to Rs. 6 lakh, there is an interest subsidy (concession) of 6.5 per cent for tenure of 15 years

The Government later increased the loan amount to Rs. 12 lakh, targeting the mid-income category. The interest subsidy on loans upto Rs. 12 lakh will be 3 per cent. In rural areas, interest subvention of 3 per cent is offered on loans up to Rs. 2 lakh for constructing new homes or extension of old homes.

What is TX- 2 initiative?

Double the number of Tigers by 2022.
Tigers are the largest species of cat and one of the most iconic animals on the planet. One hundred years ago, there were 100,000 wild tigers.
By the year 2010, as few as 3,200 wild tigers remained.
This shocking 97% population decline was driven by rampant poaching and habitat loss. In 2010, governments of the 13 tiger range countries decided innovative conservation efforts were needed. The most ambitious and visionary species conservation goal was set: to double the number of wild tigers by 2022 – the next Chinese year of the tiger.
The goal is called Tx2 running by WWF.
