FACT CHECK: Misleading “proof of life.”

RT and other outlets presented footage released on August 8 as rare images of Mojtaba Khamenei. But the same undated classroom video was already broadcast on March 19–20.

There is another problem: Iranian media reported in September 2024 that Khamenei had suspended this seminary class. If the footage shows those lessons, it likely predates that announcement and could be nearly two years old.

Mehr provided no recording date, location, participant names or explanation for recycling it now. There is no evidence the video is fabricated, but nothing proves it is recent either.

After five months without a verified public appearance, old classroom footage is not proof of his present condition. It looks more like carefully timed proof-of-life theatre.

In today’s decree, he appointed Mohsen Rezaei as his representative to the Supreme National Security Council, praising his role in the Iran-Iraq War and thanking outgoing official Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr.

A separate government announcement says President Pezeshkian also appointed Rezaei as council secretary following Zolghadr’s resignation.

Rezaei commanded the IRGC from 1981 to 1997 and has taken a hard line on Hormuz, negotiations and military retaliation. This looks less like an ordinary reshuffle and more like further concentration of security policy in veteran IRGC hands.
