A Small Note from my dear friend BANNA VENKATESH IPS, He has scored around 130 marks in Ethics in CSE 2023.
GS4 ETHICS: SOME POINTERS THAT CAN HELP
Theory:
1. Understand the meaning of all the keywords mentioned in the syllabus clearly. You can refer to standard books like lexicon or use internet or any coaching videos to make sure that the basic concepts are clear.
2. Then try to collect examples from different areas like from civil servants, social activists, reformers, leaders etc who can be attributed to such values. Quoting examples in your answers will add value.
3. Wherever possible, try to use quotes that match or explain the meaning of that particular question. Quotes can be from religious scriptures, popular leaders, freedom fighters or different western/eastern philosophies.
4. Try to use simple and clear words while writing answers. Use the keywords that we study in the theory part in your answers. Eg: any question on corruption, we can use slippery slope doctrine to explain how it starts slowly with small amounts that can eventually lead to big scandals in the future.
Case studies:
1. Try to read it clearly, and understand the crux of the case study and while starting the answers, it is good to summarise the case study in 2-3 lines as to what the case study is about and what issue we are dealing/ being faced by that particular character in that study.
2. Always try to use the keywords that we study in the theory part while writing the challenges/dilemmas faced.
Eg: Use various topics that we studied like deontology/teleology, means/ends etc.. while addressing the dilemmas (just one example⦠similarly we should use)
3. Try to use the character names and then mention what ethical issue/dilemma faced by them while answering, which makes it more clear that you have understood various stakeholders and their challenges.
4. Try to conclude the case study with a relevant quote that aptly fits in the case study.
Eg: If it is a case study that relates to the abuse of power by a civil servant, then this quote can be used
βPower can be used to light up homes. The same can be used to burn a house. Choose wisely as to how that power should be usedβ
Collect more examples and quotes. Use internet, chatgpt etc for the same.
All the best for your exam and be confident. You can clear the exam and the first step is belief in self that one can do that.
