Hello everyone,
This is Rohan Kadam. I have secured AIR 295 in Civil Services Examination- 2021. This was my 5th attempt. I have appeared for 3 Mains- Written Exams and 1 Interview. For me it was long journey with 4 failures.
Every failure tested endurance and ability to rise and slog again for the success. Failure is such a beautiful thing. It takes away all those things which you desired to be with you. Be it people, moments of happiness, social recognition and most important confidence. But when you conquer failure, success provides everything in return, probably even more than what one imagined. Particularly, in civil service exam which is so competitive that 10-12 lacs people apply for it and only 600-700 get selected.
How to deal with failure?
- Right Assessment of previous attempt. This exam is all about understanding demand of the examination. Those who get it in first place, get selected in first go. Less fortunate understand the demand after 2 or 3 attempts.
- Un-burden expectations. Since we are at most energetic phase of life ie. Youth. Everyone keeps certain expectations from us. Our Parents want us to have stable job and life. If one is into a relationship, partners have some expectations. As a person one may have some expectations from oneself. But expectations should not hamper the efficiency and effort.
- Support is 'two way' process. We must give confidence to family, friends and mentors that we will give full effort and clear this examination. Then we get unconditional support from them in return.
- Start with clean slate. It helps if we start afresh with notes. This doesn't mean to clear all previous notes and prepare new for every topic. But one must reassess gap areas and prepare fresh notes. Freshness of notes itself transmit positive energy
while reading.
- Simplicity is key to success. More simpler answers, more will be the score. More simple, lucid your presentation, more will be the score. It is rightly said, Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Trust me, Simplicity is hard earned, it requires practice. I would like to quote a Gahzal :
"ye nahīñ dekhte kitnī hai riyāzat kis kī,
log āsān samajh lete haiñ āsānī ko"
- Keep your Parachute Ready. Plan B is like parachute. Whenever one feel, S/he may hit the ground very hard, Plan B act as a parachute. This doesn't mean, we open the parachute, before even jumping. One can explore options for post-graduation or relevant courses which provide employability. This gives confidence and with free mind one can focus on civil service preparation. This also act as a cushion for family. Trust me, confidence to jump from high sky come from parachute bag which is at back. In competitive and less probable scenarios such things matter more.
Trust me,
Hope is a light which guide us in the dark!
“दिल नाउम्मीद तो नहीं, नाकाम ही तो है
लंबी है ग़म की शाम, मगर शाम ही तो है”
Keep Trying, Keep Failing and Keep Rising!
Until next time,

ETHICS PAPER
It is my Favourite paper which I really enjoyed throughout my preparation for several reasons.
1) I learned many new things which broadened my overall knowledge, perception and understanding.
For example i read new concepts like Rawls justice theory, Virtue ethics, deontology, emotional intelligence and many other concepts
2) it broadened my decision making skills especially because of these new concepts.
3) learned about many great civil servants, leaders and their ethical practices.
Eg - Metro man Sreedharan sir.
4) Real understanding of civil services problems through case studies and the methods to deal such situations.
5) How to deal Ethical dilemmas which everyone faces in our day to day life
For example whether to eat non veg or veg, online vs offline education.
6) Able to learn so much from our real life situations and able to write them in our answers in the final examination.
This way even studying the paper for six years there was always a scope for improvement in the way i see the paper.
The aim of this paper is not to make someone ethical but able to identify and practice different dimensions of ethics and to broaden the overall understanding of what is right and wrong , so that as an officer one takes a decision with clear attitude and knowledge.
