WTO is very very important for Prelims and Mains. Have basic knowledge of WTO through static sources and later know all the current events related to it. For example for last one decade or more WTO reforms were in news. Know why reforms required? What are those major reforms? Why and How it is affecting India? Etc .

I will share one common myth or misconception about the UPSC exam.

Many new aspirants believe that they have to read everything because UPSC can ask anything in the exam.

But this is completely false.

UPSC never asks unnecessary or random information. There are certain important areas and recurring themes that are consistently asked. These topics must be studied in greater depth, rather than giving equal time to all subjects.

You should not read every topic with the same intensity.

Learn to allocate your time and energy based on the weightage and pattern of previous year questions.
Once you understand this, the path becomes much easier.

Q. With reference to Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in India, consider the following statements:

1. SEZs in India are eligible to claim direct tax benefits only if they commenced operations before April 2020.
2. The WTO dispute settlement body ruled against India’s SEZ-linked export incentives on the grounds of being prohibited subsidies.
3. Under the proposed DESH Bill, states will be permitted to set up enterprise hubs independently, without needing central approval.
4. SEZs currently contribute more than one-third of India’s total exports, with services SEZs accounting for the majority share.

How many of the above statements are correct?

(a) Only one
(b) Only two
(c) Only three
(d) All four

Only Three are correct

Explanation :

Statement 1 — Correct
The sunset clause under Section 10AA ended in April 2020. Only SEZ units operational before that retain direct tax benefits.

Statement 2 — Correct
WTO ruled against India’s SEZ-linked export subsidies (including SEZs, MEIS).
They were treated as WTO-prohibited subsidies.

Statement 3 — Correct (DESH Bill)
The draft DESH Bill proposes allowing states to play a greater role, including setting up zones without central approval.

Statement 4 — Incorrect
SEZs contribute around 30% of total exports, but not more than one-third.
However, services SEZs (IT/ITES) dominate export share — this part is true but the threshold is wrong.

Surely, I can say one thing the kind of awareness and understanding of the exam, answer writing, PYQs, syllabus, and notes-making that you will gain through my mentorship sessions may not be possible even if you spend lakhs on big institutions. Without further doubt, just join and see the change yourself within 3–4 months.

However, my guidance through the channel will continue without any interruptions, so that even those who couldn’t join the mentorship sessions can still move in the right direction. I am doing my best to explain what kind of topics are asked in the exam, how to read newspapers, how to write answers, and many other important aspects through my channel.

For the best results, try to implement whatever I am sharing on the channel especially writing answers to the questions I post and then reading the model answers afterward.

Very soon, I will be conducting another live session with a friend of mine who has cleared the UPSC exam twice and is currently serving in the IPS. Through such sessions, I will continue to provide the right guidance to all our channel members.

6. Cover fewer topics but revise them multiple times.
7. Prepare crisp notes for the Mains syllabus.

10. Maintain conceptual clarity — think like an officer.
11. Balance subjects according to their weightage in Prelims and Mains.
12. Allocate sufficient time to balance Essay, GS, and Optional in Mains.
13. Balance GS and CSAT preparation for Prelims.

Above all Confidence, Common Sense, Clarity, and a focus on duty rather than outcomes are essential.
