What happens if you miss the July 31 deadline to file ITR?

If you miss the July 31 ITR filing deadline, you can file belated return by December 31. However, taxpayers with ₹5-lakh total income must pay ₹1,000 late filing fee, while those earning above ₹5 lakh must pay ₹5,000. You cannot carry forward capital losses to subsequent years. Interest of 1% per month or part thereof may apply on outstanding tax.

Anti-paper leak bill passed in Lok Sabha

The Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, which proposes harsher punishments against those involved in paper leaks, has passed in Lok Sabha. The bill was passed via voice vote. Union Minister Jitendra Singh, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi were among the Lok Sabha MPs who debated on the bill.

How can employees file ITRs even without Form 16?

Even without a Form 16, employees can file their ITRs by using their salary slips, bank statements, Form 26AS and Annual Information Statement (AIS). They should manually calculate their total salary, verify TDS and other income through AIS and Form 26AS, and claim eligible deductions. After completely verifying all details, they can file the return on the Income Tax portal.

When is filing an ITR compulsory even for people with a low income?

Filing ITR is mandatory in many situations even when a person's income is low or falls below the income tax rebate limit. These situations include having an annual income of over ₹2.5 lakh (old regime)/₹4 lakh (new regime), having over ₹1-crore current account deposits or over ₹50-lakh savings account deposits. ITR filing is also compulsory if electricity bills exceed ₹1lakh/annum.

US launches air attack on Iran

Bank of Baroda said an employee's email account was compromised after a hacker claimed to leak 1,000 GB of data. A single corporate email account can act as a master key, unlocking internal networks, cloud backups and archived files via Single Sign-On. Man left partially paralysed after police mistook stroke for drunk driving in Mumbai
