ISRO's former chief S Somnath appointed to RBI's central board

S Somanath, former chairman of ISRO, has been appointed as a part-time, non-official director on the RBI’s central board for a period of four years, effective August 20. The Centre has also re-appointed Anand Mahindra as a part-time, non-official director on the board for another four-year term. It has reduced the board’s strength to 11 directors from 15 earlier.

Bangladesh Premier League suspended

Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) will not be held this season, as the Bangladesh Cricket Board plans to overhaul the tournament. BCB president Tamim Iqbal cited franchise rule breaches, financial problems and corruption issues. The board reportedly lost over ₹31 crore over the last two editions. Tamim said he would take six or 12 months, if needed, to rebuild it properly.

Mumbai auto, taxi fares to rise from September 1

Autorickshaw and taxi fares in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) will increase from September 1. Under revised rates, the minimum autorickshaw fare will rise from ₹26 to ₹27 for the first 1.5 km, while the per-km rate will be ₹18. For black-and-yellow taxis, the minimum fare will increase from ₹31 to ₹33, with the per-km rate also revised to ₹33.

Gold crosses ₹1.6 lakh per 10 grams in India

Gold prices crossed the psychological milestone of ₹1.6 lakh per 10 grams, closing ₹3,540 higher at ₹1,60,620 per 10 grams, according to IBJA data. Notably, gold prices have risen by ₹6,752 in just the last 48 hours. When does EPF stop earning interest?

An EPF account becomes inoperative and stops earning interest three years after an individual retires at or after age 55. For example, an account becomes inoperative at 58 if the individual retires at 55, and at 61 if they retire at 58. In case of early retirement (before 55), the EPF earns interest until age 58 and becomes inoperative thereafter.

China unveils model for world's widest plane

A Chinese research team unveiled the aerodynamic model for a flying-wing plane that could become the world's widest passenger plane and seat 800 passengers at once, more than the world's largest plane. The model is 85 metres wide and 43 metres long, with a wingspan roughly 1.6x that of US B-2 stealth bomber. The model doesn't have a name yet.

Canada suspends trade talks with US, to face Trump's 50% tariffs from midnight

US and Canada failed to reach a trade deal after three days of talks, prompting Washington to impose 50% tariffs on around $20 billion worth of Canadian goods from midnight. Canadian PM Mark Carney said Ottawa suspended negotiations after “last-minute changes” to US terms were deemed unfair. Canada would impose reciprocal tariffs on US goods "dollar for dollar", he added.

A Japanese man left his tired seven-year-old son alone around 8,200 feet up Mount Fuji after asking him to wait there for eight hours while he continued climbing to the summit.
