Bengal records 61.11% voter turnout till 1 pm in phase 2 polling

West Bengal recorded a voter turnout of 61.11% till 1 pm on Wednesday in the second phase of voting. According to the Election Commission, Hooghly topped the districts with a turnout of 64.57%, followed by Howrah at 60.68%. Kolkata North recorded 60.18% polling, while Kolkata South registered 57.73%. This phase covers 142 of the total 294 seats in the state.

Indian man in US arrested for assaulting woman, biting her 3-yr-old daughter

A 24-year-old Indian national, Atharva Vyas, has been arrested in US for allegedly assaulting a woman and biting her three-year-old daughter in a park. Vyas entered US in 2023 on a student visa but had previously been arrested for felony assault. His visa was later revoked in 2025. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said it has lodged a detainer.

Indian Hajj pilgrims to pay ₹10,000 more as aviation fuel prices rise amid US-Iran war

A circular issued by Hajj Committee of India said each Hajj pilgrim from India will have to pay an additional ₹10,000. The decision was taken due to pressing requests from airlines for revision of base fare after a sharp rise in Aviation Turbine Fuel prices, it said. The committee asked selected pilgrims to deposit the extra amount by May 15.

Cigarettes to get costlier from May onwards, prices to jump 17%: Report

India's top cigarette producers are likely to increase product prices by up to 17% from May onwards to further accommodate the government's excise duty increases, NDTV Profit reported. Some cigarette packs are likely to see an increase of ₹20, with both premium and lower-priced brands expected to be hit. Cigarettes had gotten costlier by ₹5-8 per stick earlier.

Telangana Class 10 results declared, 95% students pass

The Telangana State Secondary School Certificate (TS SSC) results were declared today. The Class 10 exams were conducted from March 14 to April 16, 2026 across 2,676 exam centres in the state. Over 5.28 lakh students appeared for the exams and 95.15% cleared them. The pass percentage of girls is 96.26%, while pass percentage of boys is 94.07%.

India's largest coaching institute Allen planning to launch IPO: Report

Allen Career, the largest educational (coaching) institute of India, is considering an IPO, Bloomberg reported. The firm, backed by American-British businessman James Murdoch and ex-Disney executive Uday Shankar, has been in discussions with investment banks about a possible listing and is expected to formally appoint advisers soon. Notably, Allen was last valued at nearly $1.2 billion in 2022.

Delhi Police seize 23 ISI-backed weapons, arrest 9 people

Delhi Police Special Cell arrested nine individuals and recovered 23 weapons, including Zigana and Glock pistols, allegedly smuggled at the behest of Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence. "It also recovered country-made weapons manufactured in Bihar's Munger," police said. The weapons smuggled from Pakistan were intended for supply to anti-social elements and notorious gangsters, police added.

Sensex pares gains after 1,000-point jump, ends 610 points higher

BSE Sensex jumped 1,095 points to the day's high of 77,982.51 on Wednesday before eventually closing at 77,496.36. Similarly, Nifty50 jumped 339 points to 24,334.70 before closing at 24,177.65.
