Astrophotographer captures Lion Nebula

Astrophotographer Ronald Brecher captured a detailed image of the Sh2-132 Lion Nebula from Ontario. Using a Sky-Watcher Esprit 70 EDX refractor over 35 hours of exposure, he produced Hubble and Foraxx palette versions, showing the Nebula's 10,000-light-year-distant gas clouds. The detailed image reveals faint structures normally unseen.

Scientists discover 115-million-year-old giant shark

Fossil of a giant shark has been found off northern Australia that lived 115  million years ago. The five recovered vertebrae reveal it belonged to a modern lamniform. Each vertebra measures around 12 centimetres, indicating the species reached sizes larger than expected. Tomography and size modelling suggest this ancient shark may have rivalled today's biggest predators.
