Gold, silver prices hit all-time high

Gold prices rallied by ₹1,950 to hit a fresh peak of ₹1,27,950 per 10 grams in Delhi on Monday, according to the All India Sarafa Association. Meanwhile, silver prices jumped by ₹7,500 to reach a new record of ₹1,79,000 per kg. Spot gold and spot silver also surged to all-time highs of $4,084.99 and $51.74 per ounce, respectively.

World surpasses its first climate tipping point

According to 'Global Tipping Points Report' released today, the world has surpassed its first climate tipping point. Warm-water coral reefs, on which nearly a billion people and a quarter of all marine life depend, have crossed their tipping point, it said. The study predicts that global average temperature will rise by 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels within the next few years.

New way to produce blood in lab discovered

University of Cambridge scientists used human stem cells to create three-dimensional embryo-like structures that replicate some aspects of early human development, including production of blood stem cells. The structures, dubbed 'hematoids', are self-organising and start producing blood after around two weeks of development in lab, mimicking development process in human embryos, scientists said.

WHO flags 3 contaminated Indian cough syrups

World Health Organization (WHO) issued a health advisory and warned about three contaminated cough syrups identified in India. It has urged authorities to report detection of these cough syrups in their countries to WHO. It has flagged Coldrif from Sresan Pharmaceutical, which is linked to kids' deaths in several states, Respifresh TR from Rednex Pharmaceuticals and ReLife from Shape Pharma.

Police officer dies by suicide amid probe into IPS officer's suicide; calls him 'corrupt'

Amid the investigation into Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar's suicide, another police officer died by suicide on Tuesday after levelling allegations against Y Puran Kumar. Sandeep Kumar, posted as an Assistant Sub-Inspector in Rohtak's cyber cell, was investigating a corruption case. In a letter, Sandeep Kumar alleged that Y Puran Kumar was a "corrupt cop".

India to resume all international postal services to US from tomorrow

The Department of Posts has announced that all international postal services to US will be resumed from October 15 (Wednesday). All applicable customs duties on US shipments will be collected upfront in India at the time of booking and "remitted directly to [US CBP] through approved Qualified Parties," it stated. The department noted that it won't levy any additional charges.

Why has WHO warned about 3 India-made cough syrups?

Amid deaths of kids in India, WHO raised a medical alert about three India-made cough syrups due to higher-than-permissible limits (0.1%) of di-ethylene glycol (DEG) present in them. DEG enters syrups through permitted solvent polyethylene glycol and can be toxic to humans. Coldriff was found to have 48.6% DEG, while Respifresh and ReLife syrups contained 1.3% and 0.6% DEG, respectively.

The Central Pollution Control Board released a list of air pollution levels on Tuesday in Indian cities. Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad with a poor AQI of 261 was the most polluted city in India. List of world’s most powerful passports released, India drops to 85th

Henley & Partners released the latest list of the world's most powerful passports. India dropped to the 85th spot from 77th spot. Singapore leads the rankings with visa-free access to 193 destinations, followed by South Korea and Japan. For the first time since the Henley Passport Index was created 20 years ago, the US isn't among the top 10.

20 passengers burnt to death after bus catches fire on Jaisalmer-Jodhpur highway

Around 20 people were killed when a private bus travelling from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur in Rajasthan caught fire on Tuesday, police said. The smoke began emerging from the rear portion of the bus, which was carrying 57 passengers, and within moments the flames engulfed the vehicle, the police added. Locals and passersby helped in rescue efforts.

Fresh clashes break out between Pakistan and Afghanistan

'Mahabharat' fame actor Pankaj Dheer passes away

Actor Pankaj Dheer, who played 'Karna' in BR Chopra's 'Mahabharat', passed away aged 68. His old friend and colleague Amit Behl confirmed the news to India Today. Pankaj reportedly had cancer but fought through it. However, it relapsed a few months back and he was extremely unwell, India Today reported. He also reportedly went through a major surgery.
