India-Pakistan match at World Championship of Legends called off

The India-Pakistan World Championship of Legends (WCL) match, originally scheduled to take place tonight, has been called off after Indian players withdrew. β€œMaybe [by scheduling it], we ended up hurting...feelings of many and stirring emotions. More than that, we unintentionally caused discomfort to our Indian Cricket Legends,” the organisers said, while apologising "for hurting the sentiments".

R Praggnanandhaa beats Magnus Carlsen for 2nd time in 3 days

India's top-ranked chess player R Praggnanandhaa defeated world number one Magnus Carlsen for the second time in three days in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam. Praggnanandhaa won the first game of their intermediate match. However, Carlsen went on to win the match. Earlier, Praggnanandhaa had beaten Carlsen in round 4 of the tournament.

5 members of young family die by suicide in Gujarat

Five members of a young family died by suicide at their rented house in Bavla in Gujarat's Ahmedabad district. The deceased have been identified as 34-year-old Vipul Kanji Waghela, his wife 26-year-old wife Sonal, their two daughters (aged 11 and five) and an eight-year-old son. Police said that the reasons behind their suicide is not known yet.

Hallmarking for 9 karat gold introduced

The Ministry of Consumer Affairs has notified hallmarking standards for 9-karat gold jewellery in a bid to boost demand for lightweight gold jewellery. So far, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) had only specified hallmarking standards for gold jewellery of 24, 23, 22, 20, 18 and 14 karats. Notably, gold sales by volume had plunged by 60% in June.

Tsunami alert issued after 7 powerful earthquakes hit Russia

A tsunami warning has been issued after seven strong earthquakes were recorded off the Pacific coast of Russia, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquakes were of magnitudes 7.4, 6.7, 6.7, 6.6, 5.7, 5.2 and 5.0, as per USGS. There have been no reports yet of any major destruction from the earthquakes.

'Don' director Chandra Barot passes away

Filmmaker Chandra Barot, known for directing Amitabh Bachchan-starrer 'Don', passed away aged 86 on Sunday. His wife Deepa Barot said he had been battling pulmonary fibrosis for the past seven years. Before entering films, Barot worked at Barclay's Bank in Tanzania. He had also assisted Manoj Kumar in several films, including 'Purab Aur Pachhim'.
