If your garden yields you with lots of fruits and vegetables but you donβt want to see them go to waste, one option is to freeze dry your food. Freeze drying is the best way to preserve your food in order to eliminate food waste and to preserve it for a longer period of time.
Some benefits include:
πNutritional value isnβt compromisedπ
Freeze drying allows for preservation without compromising on nutritional value
πNatural tasteπ
No need for additives, therefore you retain the all natural food taste
πNo change in appearance, texture or smellπ
Freeze drying is a gentle process, therefore the food retains its structure, taste, texture, smell and nutritional content
πLong lastingπ
Freeze dried foods are considered to be shelf stable for 15-30 years
πConvenienceπ
These freeze dried foods can be used the same day without the need to go through a growing season
Let us know in the comments what fruits and vegetables you have freeze dried before ππ»

Hey guys, weβve had a few questions come up about dehydrating vs. freeze drying, so weβre breaking down the two.
πDehydratingπ
π§Process: Uses warm air and blowing air to remove 70-90% of the moisture out of the food.
π¦Food storage: Food can store up to a year, depending how much moisture youβve removed from the food.
πΈCost/ease: dehydrators cost less, are smaller, and you can easily build your own solar one (video example below, these can be made in any shape/size)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0f0jew8Whw
π₯¦Freeze dryingπ₯¦
π§Process: Instead of using heat, it uses really cold temps, and after dropping the temps, it creates a vacuum around the food and alternately heats and cools the food to remove the moisture, removing close to 90% of the moisture
π¦Food can store 20-25 years.
πΈCost/ease: these tend to cost more (anywhere from $2500-5000 as this is a new technology for homes). Itβs the size of a mini fridge and slightly bigger depending on the kind you get. Benefit is the super long term shelf life.
Video below explains the difference between the two processes and the woman actually shows examples of the difference between dehydrating and freeze drying 5 different kinds of food.
