🌿 Yojana Capsule 24:
Coastal Erosion
🔵 Coastal Erosion is wearing away and redistributing solid elements of the shoreline as well as sediment, normally by such natural forces as waves🌊, tidal and littoral currents🚤, and deflation.

🪀The causes are both batural and man-made

✍️ Read from the above page the three factors which lead to Wave Energy
(IMPORTANT ONE)

🌊 In this topic various concepts and terms are from Geography too..

☄️Focus on terms like:

👉Accretion and erosion
👉Temporal scales
👉Orogenic cycles
👉phenomenon of subsidence

⭕️Under Natural Causes for Coastal Erosion , we see👇
✅️ waves, winds, tides, near-shore currents, storms, sea-level rise, increasing gradient in transport rate as factors

✅️ Man- induced erosion factors👆

⭕️Groynes and jetties : though these structures protect a part of the shoreline by blocking littoral trasport through accumulation of the littoral segments on the upstream side of the groynes.

But sometimes, this process👆causes a deficit in the littoral drift budget and has a negative consequences on the downstream as the erosion problem shifts to the downward areas.✅️

⭕️Structures like seawalls, bulkheads, breakwaters etc. have too side effects in terms of erosion of adjacent areas.
🟢 Coasts are sensitive to sea level rise, changes in the frequency and intensity of storms , increase in precipitation and warmer ocean temp.
In addition, rising atmospheric concentrations of Carbon dioxide (CO2) are causing the oceans to absorb more of the gas and thus they become more acidic. And this acidity affects coastal and marine ecosystems
.

✅️ Important : Read about Structural and Non-structural measures or SOFT and HARD measures respectively.
⭕️ What are the limitations of both the structural and non-structural measures and why combination of such measures need to be adopted?

⭕️ What is Shoreline Change Atlas of the Indian Coast?

• this atlas was initiated by Space Application Centre (ISRO), Ahmedabad, in collaboration with Central Water Comnission.✅️
